As a result, our pass rates have increased from 48% to 84% over the last 3 years. One
major challenge, however, has been how to give teachers and students the skills and
confidence to use more English in the classroom.
In response, the Department of Education in partnership with the British Council
launched a teacher development programme in 2008 which aims to improve the levels
of English language teaching and learning in the state. So far, 400 teachers have
have participated in a 10 day INSETT course which will be cascaded to the remaining
3,600 teachers in the state in 2009.
