How can Green Hydrogen be used?
- In vehicles.
- For Container ships powered by liquid ammonia made from hydrogen.
- Producing “Green Steel” from refineries using hydrogen as a heat source rather than coal.
- Hydrogen-powered electricity turbines that can generate electricity at times of peak demand
to help firm the electricity grid.
- As a substitute for natural gas for cooking and heating in homes.
Advantages of Hydrogen Energy
- It is a renewable energy source present in abundance.
- It is a cleaner fuel as the by-products are totally safe
- Hydrogen energy is non toxic so it is environment friendly also.
- It is far more efficient than other energy sources. (compared to a conventional combustion-
based power plant that usually generates electricity between 33 to 35% efficiency, hydrogen
fuel cells are capable of generating electricity of up to 65% efficiency.)
- Can be used to power spaceships also.
Disadvantages of Hydrogen Energy
- Hydrogen energy is very expensive.
- Due to its lower density it has storage complications.
- It is a daunting task to transport hydrogen as it is very light and highly flammable.
Government Initiatives
GoI has already launched the National Hydrogen
Energy Mission and given impetus in scaling up the
gas pipe line infrastructure across the length and
breadth of the country. Ministry of New and
Renewable Energy has been supporting a broad based
Shobhna Walia R&D program on renewable hydrogen energy as fuel.
TGT – Natural
Science,VSKV This has already resulted in development and
Old Seemapuri demonstration of Internal Combustion Engines,
Two Wheelers, Three Wheelers And Mini Buses
that run on Hydrogen Fuel. Two refuelling stations have been
established at Faridabad and Gurugram already.
To conclude, we will be able to minimize over-reliance on fossil fuels if we embrace hydrogen
energy, but it will be hard-hitting to get rid of Fossil fuels from the system.
