n the world of inventions many remarkable exist are
there whose journey inspire us in all our way. In today’s
world we have a shining star which is brightening the sky
of science by her own light.
Our connection to water is elemental yet the lifeblood of
our planet is facing a crisis. She is an inventor and clean
water advocate. She is the recipient of the 2012 Discovery
Education 3M young scientist award. No, she is not in her
70’s, just only 26 years old, a student like you all.
Deepika Kurup was born to Pradeep Kurup and Meena
Kurup , who moved to USA in 1983.Her father was a civil
engineering professor who encouraged her interest in
Science and allowed her to set up a laboratory in the
garage. Her mother is originally from Southern Indian
state named Kerala.Deepika had a comfortable upbringing
in Nashua, New Hampshire.
Every year Deepika’s parents would take her to visit
India where she noticed how different the two nations
are. One of most striking difference she observed was
access to clean water. She noticed many children around
her age using plastic bottles to collect dirty and unsanitary
water to use for drinking washing and cooking. That so
obviously dirty she wouldn't go near it. “That really
struck me”, she says. Kurup understand that not having
access to clean water means not having clean clothes and
food. She learnt that ,for girls it also restrict access to
education, because they cannot attend school when they
have their periods.
