Struggles, Contributions and Success
After the tragic death of Pierre Marie took over Pierre’s professorship and became first woman
to teach in the Sorbonne in 1906 instead of accepting widow’s pension. She continued her
research while raising her daughters Irene and Eve. She suffered a traumatic time but her scientific
drive and will power led her to receive her second Nobel prize in Chemistry for isolating pure
Radium in 1911.She was appointed Director of the Curie Lab in the Radium Institute of the
University of Paris, inaugurated in 1914. She helped Army to organize their radiology department
during the 1914-1918 war. Radium institutes were established in France and Poland to use

Curie established Curie Foundation for treatment
of cancer by radiation in 1920.She became a
member of Academy of Medicine in 1922.
Irene and Frederic Joliot – Curie did their
researches under the direction of Marie Curie
and discovered artificial radioactivity. This
work prepared a way for the discovery of
neutron by Sir James Chadwick.
She dedicated her research on radioactive
substances to medical applications of these
substances. Marie Curie died as a result of
aplastic anemia caused by exposure to high
energy radiation from her research on July 4,
1934. She passed her legacy to her elder
daughter, Irene. Irene and Frederic Joliot-Curie
were awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Eve( Her other daughter) became a journalist
and wrote the biography ‘Madame Curie’.
Remains of Pierre and Marie Curie moved to
the Pantheon, the French National Mausoleum
, in Paris 1995. Her life
